Martha's Story
Bob and I have an interest in visiting with people of different cultures and countries. This interest lead me to learn to enjoy Persian cuisine while I was in college, and I still consider it one of the healthiest ways to eat.
Bob spent a summer, while in graduate school and before I met him, bicycling toward San Jose University inPanama (I think). He and two companions left SanJose State Univ in San Jose, Calif. Bob, being visually handicapped, provided a tandem, pedalling from the back seat. Of the three who set out, only one made it to Panama. Bob was bumped in Mexico because of chronic bicycle parts probllems, By the time the bike parts were arriving to be installed, it was time to return to college.
The purpose of their trip was to carry a friendship scroll from Calif to Panama, and one of them succeeded! He and Bob are still in touch today.
After getting married in Albuquerque, and moving to Littleton, CO where Bob taught math, we travelled to central northern Calif and Oregon to meet Bob's extended family.
Bob had spent two years teaching in El Salvador at the American High School before I knew him; but in early 1974, he took a sabbatical to return to El Salvador and study the status of math education there. our son, then 13 months old, and I, went along for a couple months to experience life in Bob's "second country". We met many of his former friends there, and made many new ones. And, survived the intestinal troubles we had to get used to.
A few years later, Bob and I went to Haifa, Israel to visit ...Expand for more
the Universal House of Justice on Mt Carmel. This is the location of the administrative and spiritual center of the Baha'i Faith. While there for 2 weeks, we spent in depth time with people from several countries as we visited the properties and gardens there, ate together, and took historical tours, as well.
Since then, we have revisited El Salvador to attend a wedding in 2005; I revisited Israel to see my niece, who was working there for a couple years, and that was 2002.
We, all three of us, went to Vancouver Island to celebrate our son's (Ruben) graduation with a Master of Arts in Teaching in 2004. Besides the world famous Butchart Gardens (created in an abandoned lime quarry), we traversed over the mountains to enjoy the western coast. We recommend it.
In turn, we have been visited by many. I met a young man from Togo, who goes by Alex, who was in Colorado with a YMCA program. He then sought political assylum because the military was after him there. He had been a university student and dared to speak out to elect a new president. After several years Alex has been granted assylum. He spent his waiting time working as a hotel housekeeper. He studied to become a nursing assistant while working, and then worked in a nursing home. Finally, he was able to get ahead enough to attend aeronautics school, and he currently puts medical equipment into helicopters. There is more story, but space is up. If you wnat to be in touch, pls look for me as MLV Bitts on Facebook, or thru Classmates. Love, Marti
